Medieval villages in Italy between enogastronomy and castles: Romagna and Montefeltro

A trip to some of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy is an itinerary of discovery between history, culture and, of course, enogastronomy; and the Romagna villages are a perfect destination to combine all these attractions in a "tasteful" journey. Romagna's specialties are the result of the stormy past of these lands. The dessert cheese is aged in underground rooms, originally built to protect the crop from the invaders; the piada, made with simple dough of flour, water and lard, came from the need to save valuable olive oil. Even the precious pig breed of Mora Romagnola was raised because it was very rustic and resistant. From the ancient necessities there was born a delicious cuisine, with its fine and robust flavours, and whose typical products are still today prepared with traditional methods in the countryside and farmhouses between the villages.

DAY 1
Gradara

Tradition wants to have the tragic love story between Paolo and Francesca, dictated by Dante in the Divine Comedy, among the walls of the great fort of Gradara. The fortress is still there, and can be visited along with the pretty medieval hamlet below. In addition to its history baggage, however, Gradara offers excellent restaurants and taverns where you can enjoy typical specialties in a suggestive setting.

DAY 2
Mondaino and Montegridolfo

Mondaino houses a treasure of flavours inside its tiny historical center: it’s the Mulino della Porta di Sotto, where today it is possible to participate in tasting of cheese and wines and of course to buy the best products for a “tasteful” souvenir.
Also in Montegridolfo the good cuisine accompanies history, and not just the medieval one; the Museum of the Gothic Line testifies to the strategic position of this hamlet during World War II.

DAY 3
Montefiore Conca

The castle of Montefiore, whose granitic geometry monitors the valley, still shows the Malatesta fights. The small village at its feet is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and not far away is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonora, a pilgrimage destination since the ‘400. But the attractions of the place do not stop there: the cellars of the area, such as the Fattoria Il Piccione or Fattoria Fiammetta wait for the travellers for tastings of the excellent local wines.

DAY 4
Montebello and Verucchio

Montebello is the most famous castle of Romagna. Besides the supernatural attractions, both the castle and the town deserve a visit. The fortress of Verucchio gave birth to the Malatestian dynasty, and offers a splendid view of the surrounding landscape. To have a break the neighbouring Tenuta Amalia, with its wine cellar and typical restaurants, and Croin and Rò and Bunï, made from an old mill.
